WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, former employees of Yahoo!. By February 2013, WhatsApp had about 200 million active users and 50 staff members.

On February 19, 2014, Facebook, Inc. announced it was acquiring WhatsApp for US$19 billion, its largest acquisition to date. On January 18, 2016, WhatsApp's co-founder Jan Koum announced that it would no longer charge users a $1 annual subscription fee.

By February 2016, WhatsApp had one billion active users. 65 billion WhatsApp messages are sent per day that is 29 million per minute. WhatsApp is permanently banned in the following countries by direct order of government: China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, United Arab Emirates (UAE)
