The health condition of the legendary sprinter Milkha Singh's wife Mrs Nirmal Kaur deteriorated on Friday with a drop in her oxygen level owing to Covid-19, doctors said.

"The condition of Mrs Milkha Singh has deteriorated with progression of disease and increase in oxygen requirement. She is presently on HFNC (high flow nasal cannula) and NIV (non-invasive ventilator) intermittently," the Fortis Hospital said in a statement.

The 82-year-old Nirmal was admitted to the hospital last week after she had developed Covid-19 pneumonia.

Milkha Singh, who is being treated for COVID-19 in the ICU of the PGIMER hospital, is "better and more stable." Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called him and enquired about his health.

Milkha's son Jeev later thanked the PM for calling his father. "Many thanks to Prime Minister@narendramodi for taking time out of his busy schedule and call dad to find out about his health," he tweeted on Friday.

Milkha Singh, 91, was earlier admitted to the Fortis Hospital in Mohali after contracting the virus, from where he was taken to the PGIMER in Chandigarh on Thursday.
